Becoming a Dental Aid
The dental assistant’s job varies from one place to another and differs from one office to another office. Dental assistants schedule appointments, do billings, keep medical records and checks on all dental supplies. Dental assistants also do diagnostic x-rays, take medical histories and make the casts. They also educate the patients on proper oral hygiene and how to take good care of their teeth and gums. The dental assistants also include sterilizing and cleaning all instruments. They mix all compounds and help the dentist prepare the patients before the procedure. The dental assistants also position the patient on the dental chair and place a bib on them. Dental assistants must have a good background in writing ad accounting skills. The dental assistants must make sure that all things are accurate. There must also be good in dealing and communicating with the patients. It is helpful also to have a knowledge on how to handle things especially children. Dental assistants must know how to do clerical tasks. They must know how to use the computer because most appointments are done by computer.
In becoming a dental assistant, first is to decide whether a person would want to be a dental assistant. Make sure that you would really want to be a dental assistant. Next step is to complete high school. Complete all requirements needed and make good in all subjects so that a person will be able to learn more. After finish a high school education, it is now the time to look for a dental assistant school. Look for one that is accredited because it will assure a person that they will be receiving the right knowledge and skills needed for this kind of job. One a person already has an option where to take a program, ask the dental assistant’s schools included in your options on what is the curriculum and programs offered. This will help a person in deciding what dental assistant school to enroll in. Ask for the requirements for enrollment also. Every dental assistant school has different requirements. These schools offer coursework in both lectures and hands-on trainings. A person is also given the option to take a one year and two year program. A one year program will give a certification while a two year program will give a person an associate degree. Once the program is completed, know if the State where one is planning to work requires a license. If the state requires, a person must take and pass both written and practical examination given by an accrediting agency. Some states also require one to have a continuing education in order to maintain a person’s license and certification.
Dental assistant’s salary shows that one can earn more than $30,000 a year. Some are paid for more than $40,000. Like any other professions, the dental assistant’s salary also depends on certain factors which are the job location, education attained and work experience. People working on metropolitan cities can really earn more that those jobs located in small towns. Those having an associate degree are also paid more that those with certifications. And those with more than a year of experience are paid much better than those working as newcomers.
